In Language Arts we use an integrated approach of the five
areas of reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing. The
teaching of Language Arts will encompass English, Spelling and
Reading. Our objectives for the students this year are:
- Read literature and non-fiction material for enjoyment and information.
- Demonstrate understanding of story elements.
- Use organizational patterns for comprehension (timelines, charts, diagrams, outlines).
- Apply literal, inferential and evaluative skills throughout the five areas of Language Arts.
- Determine and use appropriate reading strategies.
- Apply strategies for oral presentations (eye-contact, voice level, visual aids, rate of speech).
- Use effective study skills.
- Obtain information through various resources (dictionary, encyclopedia, atlas, etc.).
- Use writing as a means of exploring ideas for variety of audiences.
- Develop as writers using narrative, expository, persuasive and descriptive modes.
- Demonstrate competency of the writing process (prewriting, revising, editing, proofreading and publishing).
